Cricket is also popular in Portsmouth and Hampshire County Cricket Club play at the nearby Rose Bowl, which also features international matches. Sports facilities in Portsmouth are of an international standard and the city offers a new Olympic-sized swimming pool which will be used as a training venue for London’s 2012 Olympic Games.
The University offers excellent sports facilities and its Athletic Union has over 50 different clubs you can join, from football, cricket, rugby and hockey to more adventurous sports such as skydiving and roller-hockey. With such a good coastline, there are also plenty of water sports such as sailing, rowing and water-skiing available. The University’s sports volunteer programme ‘UP for Sport’ means you can gain coaching qualifications and deliver sporting programmes in the local community.

Sport is a major part of life in Portsmouth. The city boasts its own Premier League football team – Portsmouth FC who won the world famous FA Cup in 2008 – and clubs such as Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool regularly travel to Portsmouth to play matches.
